Spoiler-Free Plot of An Empty House Doesn’t Sneeze

Adults perceive war through a lens altered by maturity, but how does a child see it?

The book follows the story of a 15-year-old boy during World War II. Scotty lives with his parents, a sister, and an elder brother. They spend most of their time in an air raid shelter.

Although his father is an air raid warden, Scotty and his siblings live a life full of mundane activities–reading comic books, drawing, posting posters on walls, and helping their mother with house chores – enjoying a childhood unmarred by the troubles of war.

However, the ever-present threat of bombings means they must be home by the evening due to a blackout. That’s when lights go out all around, casting the city into an eerie darkness every night.

Everything’s as normal as life amidst a war can be until one day, when someone starts setting fires in the area during a blackout. Chances of an imminent air raid leave the neighborhood scared.

And while Scotty’s brother, Erik, seems to be the primary culprit, could there be someone else responsible with a more malicious intention?

Fueled by curiosity and determination, Scotty and his sister, Greta, set out to investigate.

Who is the arsonist, and what happens next in the looming danger of a war?

My Take On An Empty House Doesn’t Sneeze

An Empty House Doesn’t Sneeze is a great fictional book that thrusts you back into the past and whispers tales that are simple, interesting, yet unforgettable.

The writer has highlighted the things that happen in a war, food shortages, blackouts, fear of death, and lastly, how it affects the lives of children. I loved this book because it combines historical fiction with mystery and suspense. The characters are well-developed, and the plot keeps you engaged from start to finish.

Scotty was a brave kid with the qualities of a spy. He solved many queries during the war. The story teaches about loyalty, friendship, problem-solving, love, unity, and much more. Throughout the novel, his sister and brother stand side by side.

His friend Burr also played an important role as he helped him through highs and lows. He was intelligent and had invented great physics projects. Oh, how I love intelligent characters!

The family’s life in the air raid shelter was both simple and difficult. The author captures what it’s like to live in such tough conditions and shows how war changes everyday life. The story highlights the importance of hope and courage, even in the darkest times.

I recommend this book to everyone out there so they understand the cost of wars on not only ourselves but on young minds that have yet to cherish the beauties of this world.

About The Author Of An Empty House Doesn’t Sneeze

David Scott Richardson’s new work of MG/YA historical fiction, An Empty House Doesn’t Sneeze, explores life on the home front during WWII. Drawing from two decades as a sixth-grade teacher, Richardson recognizes history as the keel that keeps us upright in heavy seas and aims to forge a connection with those who were more than a generation unborn when the world went to war.

Richardson’s characters convey nuanced and diverse perspectives as they work to unravel ethical knots—from the origins of war to the meaning of a promise—and shed light on how beliefs and fears influence one’s choices. His themes probe father-son conflicts, grief, and ethical dilemmas, all while invoking an innate connection with nature, compelling the heart as much as the mind.

Richardson’s first MG/YA historical novel, River’s Reach: Coming of Age Amid the Fish War, was published in September 2023.
