Many of us feel like there’s no justice in the world, and fairness is the first thought going through your head when you meet the main characters of this story. Readers who love stories about abusers and criminals being brought to justice will enjoy this book.

It is about a woman, Grace Burgess, who finally dares to run away from her brutalizing husband, Owen. Unfortunately, she didn’t plan it very well and the car broke down on a side road, the pit gravel road – the location where the book got its name.

As the story progresses, more characters are introduced, like escaped prisoner Jeff Kingsley, and Martina, the contractor. Justice must prevail, but will it?

Spoiler-Free Summary

Grace stole her husband Owen’s car, trying to get away from their abusive and humiliating marriage. Owen can’t believe it when he discovers what she did and tries to get her back before someone else does.

It is vital that he get her back before the police do, or they will see the bruises on her face. Meanwhile, the car runs out of fuel, and Grace is stranded on the lonely road. She is forced to leave the car behind and carry on by foot.

On this road, she meets up with Jeff, an escaped prisoner who takes pity on her – he immediately recognized that she was running away from home. Sadly, they are both taken prisoner by a militant group headed by Major Adolphe Fichte.

Grace and Jeff need to escape from the lying man who wants to use them as a human shield. Can they escape in time and flee from the scene before the government arrives and the bullets start flying?

Grace also discovers that her sister, who she thought was dead, is still alive and has been kept in a mental institute. Though Grace is grateful to be rescued on the road by Jeff, she discovers he might be a killer.

Getting out of this situation isn’t easy for the main character and all those who help her get through it. Will the protagonist of this captivating story find the freedom and happiness she is yearning for?
