An enthralling conclusion to the epic trilogy, “Dissonance Volume III: Renegade” by Aaron Ryan brings Sergeant Cameron “Jet” Shipley’s gripping battle against the gorgons to a poignant and satisfying end. With a relatable protagonist and a celebration of humanity’s resilience, Ryan’s straightforward storytelling delivers a compelling finale.

Spoiler-free Plot

Author Aaron Ryan continues the epic journey begun in Volume I and II in an increasingly tense post-apocalyptic landscape, set amidst a gritty, attainable future Earth in this alien invasion thriller series.

Sergeant Cameron “Jet” Shipley lost everyone to the gorgons and has to deal with lost faith in humanity, a lot of apocalyptic danger, and a massive enemy that might be too much for him to handle in this final volume.

My take on Dissonance Volume III: Renegade

The great thing about trilogies is that you can see the author’s full vision when the story ends. You can look back at the story and come up with a greater understanding of what was their intent. Therefore, that is something that I really wanted to see take place with the adventures of Jet and the threat of the gorgons, which is something that, from my perspective, led to a very positive conclusion in this third book, Dissonance Volume III: Renegade.

One thing that I like about Aaron Ryan as an author is that he is very straightforward. This is a story about a soldier dealing with the destruction of earth, as daunting as it may sound. A man who has seen the worst of men and still decides to fight for them, which is a concept that is timeless and is always going to resonate with the audience.

You can tell that this entire trilogy was written in one sitting as this third book offers a lot of solutions and concludes several plot points in what seems to be a satisfying manner. That is something that a lot of people tend to struggle with when it comes to writing endings but I have to say that Ryan delivered the goods in that department.

While I could talk about different characters, I don’t like giving away spoilers, so I’m just going to talk about the protagonist, Sergeant Cameron “Jet” Shipley. Jet is very human but also aspirational to some degree in the sense that he goes through a lot of difficult and even horrible things throughout the story but still continues to fight the gorgons and try to save humanity from what is basically an apocalypse.

It is a very daunting task, and he is often struggling throughout the book, which is great from a writing perspective because his motivation is noble and yet has to deal with a lot of problems. That is something that sticks with you as you are reading the series and makes this third book all the more enjoyable to read as you are getting a satisfying sendoff for this character.

I would also like to point out the final pages of the book, with Jet’s final words. They can be read as a memento to the reader, an ode, in a way, to the very nature of humanity. Dissonance is a series that can go in a lot of dark places at times but this third book reads as a celebration of humanity can be even at its lowest moments, which is shown through the character of Jet.

From a more technical perspective, the dialogue is strong, the writing style is fairly accessible, and having Jet as the narrator for the bulk of the series makes it a lot more personal. By the time the story ends, we have gotten to know Jet and his struggles, which makes the final moments of the trilogy feel like a monumental victory he has gained after so much war and conflict.
