Spoiler-free Plot
In a parallel world of heroes called Nightfall, the story follows three siblings, Hudson, Ethan, and Charles, the Offspring of the two most amazing superheroes. Before the trio can begin proper training, a supervillain kidnaps their parents out of a plan for revenge. The brothers must embark on a quest to save their parents by teaming up with an old retired alcoholic hero named Avalor. As they begin their journey, the three brothers will discover the pros and cons of being superheroes.
My take on The Mighty Chronicles: Rise of Heroes
Unlike what people are used to in the literary world, Elias Ricardo Garcia, the author of The Mighty Chronicles Rise of Heroes, is part of a new generation of writers who have started publishing their stories from a very early age. In Garcia’s case, at just 21 years old, he has already published this book that has taken him a little over 2 years and that represents much of the author’s experiences and tastes. Garcia defines himself as an outcast with a predilection for stories of heroes.
The story takes readers to a world called Nightfall where superpowers are relatively common, although not everyone has them. There are several who do and of those, some choose to be heroes and protect others while others prefer to live normal and quiet lives. Superheroes have a fairly defined structure where, upon reaching a certain age, they can begin their training to become professionals, and those who are children of superheroes can begin their training with their parents. Once a celebrated hero, the Great Knight succumbed to alcoholism and depression, while two fellow heroes, the Eagle and Timeline, found happiness in building a family. They’d have three children with powers of their own.
The structure of the book reduces detailed descriptions and focuses more on interactions and dialogues in addition to explaining each thing that may be relevant so that the reader has a better idea of the context and the story itself. When The Eagle and Timeline are kidnapped by a supervillain, their sons, Hudson, Ethan, and Charles, must step up to ironically save two of the greatest heroes Nightfall has to offer. The boys interrupt their budding training to take on a challenge that could prove difficult, even for seasoned professionals. However, they won’t do it alone – they’ll have the support of The Great Knight, who, while not at his best, doesn’t want to lose any more of his friends.
This is the beginning of the story of The Mighty Chronicles Rise of Heroes, which, at first glance, may seem like a classic superhero story, more like a comic than a book. Little by little, it takes us into two different perspectives: that of the 3 young people who face their first challenge as heroes and that of the veteran who feels he must redeem himself. Garcia’s writing is not intended to be complicated or far-fetched, it simply seeks to tell a fantasy story with concepts that he has developed throughout his life.
The book takes on an increasingly deeper tone as the young people encounter the difficulties of being a superhero and learn about the less glamorous side of the role. On the other hand, the trip helps Avalor (The Great Knight’s real name) to recapture ideas and feelings that alcohol and depression had buried. The storytelling and the adventurous concept make this work an entertaining story that can be enjoyed by young people and adults, as well as being relatively short due to the way it is structured.
In many ways, this story can be considered the fulfillment of a lifetime of ambitions and dreams, with Garcia representing that with a very good story. This book gets an 87 out of 100 from me—a must-read!
