The novel is about a character named Paul Nesbitt who is trying to run away from his family in search of peace during a confusing time in his life. While he is trying to balance between his feelings and his need for a good life, he falls in love with Laura; a pretty young woman from the town. He portrays himself to Laura in a picture he doesn’t fit in. In finding himself in a situation that has gone wrong, he decides to do one thing that makes sense to him. Is he going to fail or succeed?

Spoiler-free Plot

Since his father lost his job, Paul Nesbitt’s household had been marked by family struggles. The family moved out of several houses and lived in a plain house. His dreams and thoughts are about his future endeavors and his wish to go away from his family. He dreams of driving off and abandoning the oppressive environment of Port Beach, which corresponds with his aspiration for freedom and a good life.

Paul’s father frequently shouts at Paul and the rest of the family. Paul recalls how his father used to be physically strong in the past and is now weakened by alcohol abuse. There are times when he thinks about the violence that was taking place within the family, which made him dread for his life and the efforts that his mum made trying to get help for her children from police officers without success. Although Paul eventually became more capable of standing up to his father, yet he avoided direct confrontation. However, things take a new turn when Paul encounters and falls in love with Laura.

Paul experiences several setbacks that test his patience. Will he give in?
