My take on Cataclysm: Legend of The Iron Warrior, Vol. 2

We often establish a relationship between the lives of authors and their works, seeing them as products of their experiences. In this case, T.V. Holiday is a former marine who became a sergeant and served as a war correspondent and perhaps that experience was what led him to create The Legend of The Iron Warrior. The first part, Slaying Paradise, took us to Carnage Coast which was basically the place where the battles between heaven and hell took place and the protagonist, Travis Holiday, had to face temptation and show the strength of his faith, while becoming the legendary Iron Warrior.

While we don’t want to give away any spoilers for the ending of Slaying Paradise, we can say that Travis manages to become the Iron Warrior and stop Lucifer’s plan, albeit at a very high cost to himself. By the beginning of Cataclysm, our protagonist finds himself dealing with the price he had to pay in the first part of the story and also with the fact that he has become one of Lucifer’s enemies and everything that entails. Carnage Coast itself is a place full of despair with demons that bring terror to that world and heroes who sometimes fall into that despair and the author does a very good job transmitting that feeling and taking the reader to feel like they are in Carnage Coast.

T.V. Holiday uses several subplots within the story to show different aspects of the protagonist as he focuses on him from different angles, some more human and others more of the hero he has become. On the one hand, there is the connection with Rebecca, who is a detective investigating a large group of murders, which has a much deeper origin than it initially appears. On the other hand, there is his relationship with Crystal, a woman he rescued and with whom we see a more human side of Travis, as he overcomes his loss. We could add his most heroic and strongest version that must face any of Lucifer’s minions that he decides to send his way.

The action elements are common and serve to give a sense of comic book story to Cataclysm as Travis has to face different types of challenges in his different facets. The action also gives way to very graphic scenes that may be too strong for some readers, however this is also part of the whole atmosphere and the sense that the author wants to give to a dark but very interesting story.

The core of the Iron Warrior saga is about a man confronting his own inner demons, constantly encountering trials that lead him to question himself and doubt which path to take. Not only Cataclysm but also Slaying Paradise can be a good start for those new to the world of dark fantasy, but it can also be a great experience for those who already have some experience in this genre, since the mix of the elements we already mentioned results in a captivating story.

Trigger Warning:

Cataclysm contains scenes of graphic violence, intense action, and psychological trauma. Themes include despair, death, demonic entities, and inner turmoil. Some content may be disturbing for sensitive readers. Discretion is advised.
