Best Isekai Light Novels to read in 2022

Isekai Light Novels (Japanese for “another world”) novels are a subgenre of fantasy novels that feature the setting in another world. While it’s not just about magic and elves, most of these stories involve humans who find themselves in this strange new world. In some cases, they may be reincarnated into new bodies or burdened with special abilities; other times they’re just thrown into this other world without any reason at all. Either way, they typically have no idea how they got here or why their powers seemed so familiar until something happens (usually combat). These books are very popular among Japanese readers because they evoke so many different emotions while simultaneously being easy to follow—just pick up one and start reading!

Overlord

The Undead King by Kugane Maruyama is about the once popular multiplayer online game Yggdrasil. When it shuts down for good, those who stay logged in experience a strange phenomenon – they have been transported to a game world themselves. Some would choose to log out because of the real-world being turned into a fictional one, but it’s said that a man named Momonga leads them.

And so Kazuma’s grand adventure to defeat the demon king begins…is what should have happened. But now he’s been burdened with the useless goddess Aqua and the explosion-magic obsessed loli girl Megumin as they struggle to obtain just the necessities, doing nothing but hard Labor Day in and day out.

The Rising of the Shield Hero

Unflappable Otaku Naofumi Iwatani, who spends his days reading manga and playing video games, is unexpectedly transported to a parallel reality! He learns that he is one of four heroes who have been given legendary weapons and are entrusted with preventing the end of the world as it is predicted to occur. Reincarnated As A Sword

A magical sword rescues a young beast girl from a life of servitude after being reincarnated as a sentient weapon with memories of his previous existence, but without his identity. The sword wants to discover why he is here, and Fran, the cat-eared girl who takes control of him, is simply interested in getting stronger. The odd pair’s quest has only just begun when they work together!

The Weakest Manga Villainess Wants Her Freedom!

The storyline is the most important part of a light novel. It’s what makes the book stand out from other novels, and it’s what makes you want to continue reading after finishing the story.

The Weakest Manga Villains Wants Her Freedom! has an interesting premise: Unlike the typical flow of villainess turning nice after remembering her past life, the main character, Elle, still retains a large portion of her personality. She’s a tsundere who loves saying her own brand of catchphrases, she’s aware of how cute she is, and she still kidnaps (miserable) people in the hope of giving them a better life. There’s also not a lot of past life recollections aside from her knowledge of the manga, which gives more focus on the fantasy world. The vibe is very much like if Disgaea is given a novel form.

Skeleton Knight in Another World

When a player falls asleep, he awakens in the world of the game he was playing! Arc possesses his character’s formidable talents and weaponry, but there’s one problem: he’s also trapped looking like that character. If he can get acclimated to being a walking skeleton, an adventure in a wondrous new realm awaits him!

The protagonist, like other isekai, takes the way of becoming overpowered. Unfortunately, this isn’t a joyful over-powered novel like previous books, but rather the protagonist never felt in danger during the entire book. Everything goes swimmingly for him, and at the conclusion of the story, he hasn’t altered as a person, nor has he shown any weaknesses other than their skeleton look. (And, in the end, that doesn’t help him)

Lord of Goblins

Lord of Goblins is an interesting reincarnation story about an accomplished veteran ferocious warrior from the future who dies and is reborn as the lowest sort of Goblin while preserving all of his memories. From there, we go on an adventure tale that spans numerous genres, including fantasy, war strategy, and dungeon crawler, and is interspersed with flashbacks of Lev’s military days (where he was a total badass, of course.)

Anger. Pain. Both joy and sadness. Lev disappeared into the nothingness, leaving them all behind. What about his triumph? Had all his troubles been in vain? As he was transmigrated into another body, his dreams, and adversaries slipped from his hands. He wanted to see the world transform, but that chance was taken away from him – or was it?

Reincarnated as the Last of my Kind

A teen girl dies and is reincarnated in a another planet. She is completely conscious as a baby when her parents place her in a basket in a river to save her life. We monitor her rescue and then once a year for the first several years. Nothing significant occurs. A slice of life in an out-of-the-way inn. We do realise she is not human, and there are two major challenges that she will most likely have to deal with in the future.

While the story is well-written and moderately enjoyable, her fixation with being thankful to her caregivers is a little crinchy for me (and probably most westerners), and the world construction is rather standard.

In Another World With My Smartphone

Mochizuki Touya, 15, wakes up to find himself face-to-face with God after a bizarre event involving lightning kills him. “I’m afraid to confess that I made a mistake…” laments the old coot. But not all is lost! God claims that he can reincarnate Touya into a fantasy realm, and as an added benefit, he gets to bring his smartphone! So Touya’s journey begins in a strange, anachronistic pseudo-medieval world.

When the main protagonist enters another planet, he is fairly overpowered, and one may think that reading this light novel that this person simply uses his smartphone to solve problems in a world. Where everything is in a medieval and fantasy setting, but it is more concentrated as a standard harem.

The World’s Strongest Rearguard: Labyrinth Country’s Novice Seeker

Arihito is reincarnated in a dream realm after a life as a corporate lapdog. Surprisingly, he’s been placed to the ambiguously named Rearguard class. It appears strange, but Arihito quickly realises that, while not flashy, he’s earned the ability to perform just about anything in battle, from aiding in attacking and defending to healing! As he begins his new life, he immediately attracts fascinating associates, including his previous boss, who is younger than him, a mystery demi-human mercenary girl, and a stunning high-level swordswoman. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

Satoru Mikami, a lonely 37-year-old who hates his monotonous life and is locked in a dead-end profession, wakes up in a fantasy world as a slime monster after dying at the hands of a robber. His adventures with the other monsters set off a series of events that will forever alter his new environment as he adjusts to his gooey new existence!

The Dirty Way to Destroy the Goddess’s Heroes

It began as your typical isekai novel, with the protagonist being relocated to a realm where he is to serve the demon king, who is continuously besieged by reviving heroes. Think of those video games where you keep dying and come back to torment the antagonist, as the author says in his author statement at the end of the book. It’s like that, only the demons aren’t all that nasty.

This is an unusual isekai (teleportation to another world) light book series. In this narrative, the Blue Demon Lord, Ludabite Krolow Semah, arrived to the land of Obum because his daughter Rino adored human cuisine. The cuisine in the Demon World does not appear to be delicious. But the Demon Lord needed a means to get rid of the “Heroes” of this parallel reality planet, Obum, so he called someone from another world who was so terrified of the Black Demon Lord that he died of terror. The Blue Demon Lord reincarnated him, then simply returned him to his original realm. On the Demon Lord’s second attempt, he summoned Sinichi Sotoyama to this other planet.

Alice in the Country of Diamonds: Bet On My Heart

This is a well-crafted and connected narrative centred on Alice and the Mad Hatter. It was intriguing to observe the relationship between Alice and Blood throughout the novel.

The narrative takes place in a completely new nation for Alice, yet it is unlike any other country she has visited. In this country, Alice remembers everyone, but no one remembers her, and the people she meets are younger than their previous selves, and not only are they younger, but they are also a little different in personality, and not everyone from before is present, and Alice must adjust to the fact that she is seeing overly familiar faces and being treated as if they had never met.

Mashiro is resurrected in a world that resembles the otome game she was enamored with. This time, though, she has no idea how to avoid the twists and turns of certain character pathways, especially the awful endings! As a seven-year-old, she intends to follow in the footsteps of a pianist in order to fully immerse herself in the musical world, but no matter where she turns, she can’t seem to avoid sparking events and being engaged with difficult yet attractive individuals!
