The witches were not safe in the world of cruel humans. Sybil Cotterill with her beloved mother, Olivia set sail for the British Colonies, seeking refuge in Salem, only to find themselves amid another witch hysteria.
Olivia hands over her silver pentacle that holds the mystical powers to Sybil. Tragedy strikes on the way when Olivia is forced to die, leaving Sybil to navigate her grief alone. How Sybil overcame the grief of her mother’s death was touching and emotional.
In Salem, for three years Sybil and Constance, her neighbor, lived hiding their identity, fearing the witch hunters, saw many humans hanging other humans declaring them as witches.
They both practiced their magical powers on full moon and midnights, in the dark thick forests. Sybil’s healing powers bring relief to many ill residents of Salem, but fear and superstition prevail. The townspeople blame witches for their misfortunes—famine, sickness, and disasters.
Nature has its plans, the courts and judges, having spied on them for a long time, uncover their true identities and force Constance and Sybil to death, knowing their identities.
In this desperate situation, Sybil spilled the truth herself and used her super magical powers that she had never used before.

The modern times had begun when Marcelo, the vampire, the blood-drunker somehow finds Sybil’s pentacle and awakes her from her tomb. Their fates are intertwined in mysterious ways.
Sybil goes on a quest to find the descendants who murdered her loved ones to take revenge. Marcelo tries to save the descendants, questioning his existence.
Having no other choice, will Sybil take revenge or would mysterious powers quench the darkness and cruelty from her heart?

My Thoughts on Above The Ashes:
The writer has made a great fantasy suspense plot with Sybil’s character, who was characterized by both strength and emotion as she attempted to lead a regular life alongside her family.
Constance and Sybil were living a happy life when the odd happened in their lives. The moment when Sybil was trying to save Constance was as cold as the emotions of the citizens of Salem. It was full of suspense and emotion. Fernandez’s writing brings this scene to life, making it a standout moment in the book and showing how good of a writer he is.
Sybil’s troubled mind was a result of her dark history and the murder of her fellow witches, pushing her towards a path of vengeance. What happened next was strange, yet predictable in a good way.
Marcelo, the vampire, also had a terrible past having a devil’s soul, but he was still kind and soft-hearted being a contrast to Sybil.
As the story progresses, the dynamic between Sybil and Marcelo becomes more interesting. The internal conflict experienced by Marcelo and the quest undertaken by Sybil combine to form a story that is brimming with suspense and emotion.
Amidst themes of loss and vengeance, this enthralling tale promises to ensnare readers in its gripping narrative until the very last page, leaving them yearning for more.
