It is true; a massive disconnect exists between employers and employees, during the current innovative era of history we find ourselves in which lends itself to out of the box problem-solving that should, ideally, be utilized to eradicate the malcontentment.

Many industries have protections, pledges to diversify their workforce, and performance-based reward schemes put in place for the benefit of their laborers, and yet many of those same laborers are acutely aware of just how much their efforts result in a net loss in comparison to their higher-ups in this modern age of information.

Author Angela Jackson tackles the core causes of this divide while providing proven solutions that can easily be adapted to a variety of different workplaces around the globe. The goal behind her data-driven research is to ensure that everybody feels as though they are winning throughout the tenure of their employment under a company or employer bold enough to adopt the advice provided in this enlightening read.

Summary of the book

Commencing with a warm foreword, we are next greeted with an introduction explaining Angela Jackson’s early motivations, tied to her familial background, that have inspired her journey down the current path she has chosen for herself, and in turn prompted the writing of this informative book, born from the desire to pass along the meaningful discoveries she has compiled throughout her career as a founder of a firm dedicated towards creating a positive impact on the labor landscape.

We are given a thorough explanation of the existence of “zero-sum workplaces”, complete with an apt, real-world example.

From then on, the nine pillars which serve as the fundamental components of Angela Jackson’s “win-win workplace strategy” are described in detail. Each subsequent chapter delves into even further detail on each pillar, including subject specific case studies to bolster the readers’ understanding of the content, allowing them to better recognize the presence or lack thereof of actions associated with each pillar in relatable scenarios that they may well have previously, currently or will find themselves in the future, on one or both sides of the boss-worker relationship.

To counter business’, and mostly capitalism’s penchant for selfishness, much time is spent revealing the rewards business owners stand to reap by bettering conditions for their employees from the top down.

Anyone can write a book evaluating workplace culture, highlighting the common mistakes made by employers while suggesting fixes that have worked anecdotally; what sets this book apart from the horde of other published books of similar ilk is Angela Jackson’s skill set. Her career brands her as an authority on the matter.

The broad net her organization casts when gathering data instills further confidence when reading The Win-Win Workplace, it massively boosts the validity and persuasiveness of the information this book aims to disseminate when the proof laid out before the readers has been affirmed tens to hundreds of times over.

In terms of the format, the manner in which each idea is presented and then reinforced by a case study makes learning more memorable. Having a real-life example to tie to each principle pillar helps significantly with memory retention. Asking questions directed towards the readers—even though the answers are revealed shortly after—promotes active learning, increasing engagement between the reader and the material.

The combination of qualitative and quantitative data allows for both a holistic emotional and logical assessment when considering which method a reader would choose to implement.

Overall, this book is quite an enlightening read.
