Jason is met with horrible consequences after he tries to escape his past. They follow him everywhere, even in his dreams. Set in a futuristic New Toronto where superpowers and science fiction collide, “The Call of Abaddon” by Colin Searle delivers a gritty tale of survival. It’s more than just a piece of science fiction.

Spoiler-Free Plot

New Toronto is just a fractured city on a nearly vanishing Earth, leaving the people there to explore ruins underground to survive.

Jason is trying his best to survive, too. But things go south when psychic shocks from an ancient obelisk, the Abaddon Beacon, keep hitting him at random. They are hurting physically, mentally, and emotionally. He uses drugs to stop the pain, but even that sometimes backfires.

After one of Abaddon’s worst attacks on Jason’s mind, he’s left with no other choice but to find Abaddon. But reaching Abaddon isn’t simple. He’s locked away within a United Earth Federation lab facility for over a century, projecting its alien technologies far beyond the lab, masked as gifts for the humans. It’s also surrounded by secrets, danger, and memories none of them want to relive.

Jason, his older brother David, and a girl named Sam make up the team. Now they have to go back to the world that nearly destroyed them. Jason has no other choice, because if he doesn’t face Abaddon, the psychic torment will rip him apart from the inside out.

While Jason wants Abaddon to be gone, a cruel and ruthless Emperor wants the Beacon’s potential all to himself. He makes it clear that he will stop at nothing until he gets it.

Time is running out. Jason, alongside his companions, has to face Abaddon before the human race gets destroyed. He’s left with a choice: embrace the power or surrender to the Beacon, ultimately leading to the doom of mankind.

My Take on The Call of Abaddon

What “The Call of Abaddon” does exceptionally well is build a futuristic world that feels tangible. It’s all described in a way that doesn’t just tell you what’s there. It makes you feel like you’re walking alongside the characters. The author’s imagery is sharp, not overwhelming in the least, and that balance makes the setting stand out. This is what makes it stand out from the other books in the same genre.

I struggled to understand the world-building at first, but once I got it, everything fell into place. It made the plot more enjoyable and engaging.

The characters, though, are what really carry this story. Jason’s flaws are front and center; he messes up, he reacts before he thinks, and he doesn’t always listen. David, who constantly questions reality, and Sam, a fighter and strategist, each bear their own scars.

There’s a raw honesty in how their relationships are written. They don’t always get along. They argue, pull away, and come back together. It doesn’t feel forced. The relationships in this book are layered. There’s tension and mistrust. The little ways they surprised you were something I genuinely appreciated.

Overall, “The Call of Abaddon”, the first installment, was a fantastic read.

About The Author Of The Call of Abaddon

Colin Searle is an artist/author from Toronto, Canada. He likes swimming, biking, and dreaming up imaginary stuff. Sometimes he’s even crazy enough to write that stuff down. Crazier still when he draws it.
