Screen size: think about your preferred text size
A larger screen gives you more space for the page. If you use a larger font, that may mean less frequent page turning. The smaller Kindle, on the other hand, may suit the person who wants to slip a reader into a bag and take it everywhere.
Both models have the same stated text resolution. Paying more is not a simple choice between readable and unreadable text. Consider how much room you want around the words and how you expect to hold the device.
Lighting: brightness and warmth are different
Both devices have a front light. Paperwhite additionally lets you adjust the light towards a warmer tone. That can be a preference worth paying for if you already know you like an amber-looking page in the evening.
Warm lighting does not mean you must replace a basic Kindle that you enjoy. Nor should it be confused with dark mode. The useful question is whether you want that extra control over the appearance of the page.
Water resistance: useful for some routines
If you frequently read near water, Paperwhite offers a feature the basic Kindle lacks. Follow Amazon’s care instructions and rating conditions; water resistance is not a reason to treat a device as indestructible.
If your reading happens on the sofa or during a dry commute, this feature may have less value to you. Buy around your own routine rather than someone else’s ideal reading photograph.
Storage and charging: avoid paying for an imagined problem
The standard versions have the same stated storage capacity and use USB-C charging. More storage is not automatically necessary simply because your wish list keeps growing.
Look at the files you use and how much you need to keep downloaded. Large illustrated files and audio can change your requirements. Compare the capacity you actually need before moving to a more expensive edition.
Is Paperwhite Signature Edition necessary?
The Signature Edition offers 32 GB of storage, an auto-adjusting front light, and wireless charging. It is worth considering if those conveniences matter to you. The standard Paperwhite already covers the main reasons for choosing this family: the larger screen, warm-light adjustment, and water resistance.

Compare the total purchase price
Use the prices available in your country on the day you buy. Check the precise generation, seller, condition, cover, and any advertising or subscription terms shown in the offer. A sale on an older model is not a like-for-like comparison with a different release.
Ask yourself what the extra amount buys for your reading. If you cannot name a feature you would use, keeping the money for books is a reasonable decision.
