Death Knell Chronicles: Redemption is a YA Fantasy that is worth reading

If you enjoy young adult adventure and fantasy, we highly recommend the Death Knell Chronicles. The first book of the possible trilogy, Redemption draws inspiration from some of the greatest fantasy universes that literature has to offer, including Lord of The Rings and Hour of the Dragon. 

The story follows the journey of a young lion cub, Maurus, and the well-written and detailed descriptions will leave you feeling as though you are experiencing everything with the main character right along with him. From moments of joy and excitement, as Maurus discovers his path in life, to tragic instances of loss and suffering – the book has a little of everything.

Spoiler-Free Summary

In the remote village of Du’Ron, Maurus and his clan of lionmen warriors inhabit a small, fortified town found on the edge of the Dragonspine Mountains. With big dreams and aspirations of eventually becoming a warrior himself, the eleven-year-old cub still has plenty to learn about the way of his people and the dangers that the world has to offer.

One day, while going about his everyday routine, Maurus’ village is hit by a treacherous storm that wreaks havoc upon the lionmen. The storm brings with it a swarm of mysterious creatures that assail the village, leading to the loss of countless lives. Maurus is faced with feelings of devastation and loss, as his community is torn apart in the blink of an eye. 

In the wake of this tragedy, Maurus, his mother Mari and the few remaining lionmen are forced to flee their home and find a new way of survival. The small group make a vow that one day they will avenge their fallen kin. 

However, even amongst the chaos and hardship, the book closely follows Maurus’ growth as a character. The young cub finds courage, strength and determination on his journey to avenge his family and friends. 

Fleeing his fallen village, he embarks on an adventure of self discovery, meeting new friends and making alliances along the way with a diverse group of beings who each have struggles of their own. The young cub goes on to navigate treacherous landscapes and encounters challenges unlike he’d ever known before, forging him into the warrior he once dreamed of becoming. 

My Takeaway on Death Knell Chronicles: Redemption

As a reader, it’s easy to get sucked into the story-telling. You will feel the emotions of desperation and heartache as if they are your own, as the book goes into so much depth and detail. Sometimes the descriptions may go into a bit too much detail. This can feel unnecessary at times, especially when the descriptions don’t have any real impact on the plot or storyline.

However, with challenges and plot-twists hiding around every corner, you will never get bored or be able to predict what happens next. Maurus is faced with a number of important decisions and it’s often difficult to determine which choices he will make. 

As he is driven by feelings of hate and revenge, the undertone of the book is oftentimes laced with an element of darkness. However, the story closely follows themes of loyalty and friendship, which brings in a more upbeat and positive undertone. 

It’s also easy to see yourself in some of the characters, as they are so well written and have highly developed story-arcs. This is especially true for Maurus, which adds an extra layer of emotion when reading about his struggles. 

If you are looking to be engulfed in a story of adventure and heroism, Death Knell Chronicles: Redemption is a great choice. It’s an incredibly easy read and has something for just about everyone.
