My take on LIT – RAGE
Mark Anthony, the writer of the LIT trilogy, started this story during the pandemic, which allowed him to develop his ideas better while combining it with a job as a nurse, which, at that time, must not have been easy. Mark himself has explained that it all started thanks to a terrible nightmare he had and that since then he has sought fear as a source of inspiration. Feeling scared helps him avoid writer’s block. One of the hardest things about making a series of books is to keep the interest and surprises going with each new story in the series.
In this case, Anthony has improved the way he develops the characters throughout the story, especially compared to the beginning of the trilogy where the protagonists had a slower start and it took some time to see their change over time. Rage brings us Sam Morris, our protagonist, and quickly immerses him in a terrifying world where survival is a victory. The story and everything that happens to him begins to break Sam, who finds two other characters, Ellie and Josh, who help him get his humanity back on track.
It may sound exaggerated, but the situations and choices that Rage puts in the path of its protagonists force us to talk about humanity as an element in itself that takes on a notable importance since the destiny of the characters depends on it. Unlike the first part and following a bit the line of the second, this third one brings us something more direct and with less preamble, giving us action much faster, which in LIT means the presence of supernatural creatures and monsters from another world.
Rage proves that practice makes for improvement, as those who have already read the two previous books will see how Anthony increasingly achieves that balance between the most important elements of his story, such as suspense and terror, along with action and, above all, the mental aspect of his protagonists. This balance is one of the reasons why the story can maintain the interest of readers.
Anthony’s writing style is also noteworthy, as he makes great use of vocabulary to describe situations with a certain poetic touch, almost in the style of old horror stories. This also helps to create scenes that can generate chills and nightmares similar to those the author had when he started LIT. In addition to the moment itself where chaos occurs, Anthony knows how to develop the moment leading up to it, something that helps a lot to create suspense before the event occurs.
Horrible monsters, terror, suspense, loss of humanity, uncomfortable situations. All elements that the work brings with it and that are part of the series. Probably, casual readers will not enjoy Rage (or the rest of the LIT trilogy) as it is intended for a specific audience however, for those, who are a fan of horror stories and dark fantasy, they will be those who truly appreciate and enjoy this work in the same way that they surely appreciated the first LIT and Ascent book.
