“Gothikana” Controversy Shakes the Book World: A Deep Dive into the AI Art Debate
Archive: February 2024 news. Clarified October 9, 2026. The controversy concerned the cover of Bramble’s January 23, 2024 hardcover edition of RuNyx’s Gothikana. Reporting identified AI-generated stock assets incorporated into the design, rather than establishing that the entire cover was generated by AI.
In a February 21, 2024 report, Publishers Weekly described how BookTok creator @emmaskies identified two Adobe Stock images used on the cover. Both were labelled as generated with AI. Her February 9 video raised concerns about the place of human artists in publishing.
The discussion raised questions about how publishers check the origins of licensed stock images and how readers can identify AI-generated elements in cover art. These are questions about sourcing and disclosure as well as the finished design.
Bramble had not responded to Publishers Weekly’s request for comment by its publication deadline. The report did not establish that RuNyx selected the stock images. A Tor statement about unknowingly licensing an AI-generated image concerned Christopher Paolini’s Fractal Noise, a separate cover controversy.
For this edition of Gothikana, the distinction matters: criticism of identifiable stock assets should not become an unsupported claim about every element of the cover or the author’s role in producing it.
