It’s winter, and what better way to enjoy the season than by delving into a spooky, “Stranger Things”-esque fiction book? One that makes you jump under your blankets, all the while keeping you guessing about what will happen next. Readers, here’s the best book for January 2024: Edge of the Rift by R.N. Jackson – a fantasy fiction masterpiece that captivates, excels, and leaves you awestruck!
Spoiler-Free Plot of Edge of The Rift:
Esta Brown, angry, left her class and was walking through the hallway when she saw two students. They were talking secretly about going to a Murder House, which one of the boys’ dads had the keys to.
Esta, haunted by a past incident where her father went missing in that same house, decided she wanted to go inside it with these boys, once and for all.
Later that evening, outside the Murder House, Esta was found by Simon Taylor, one of the two boys. They both went inside and started to explore. Surrounded by the house’s gruesome past, strange paintings, and a spooky atmosphere, they began to feel nervous.
Inside, Simon and Esta, along with the second boy, Graham, found Esta’s father’s belongings, confirming he had been there.
When Graham and Simon were leaving the house, Esta heard weird sounds and saw apparitions coming from a specific door. She was scared.
What will happen next? Will Esta find out what happened to her father? Is she about to open a portal to another world, or is it just a normal house?

My Take on Edge of The Rift:
Upon beginning Edge of the Rift, two aspects immediately stood out to me:
First, the simplicity and beauty of the writing. Having read hundreds of books, I often find many to be complex and challenging to comprehend. However, this book’s straightforward narrative quickly captured my attention and understanding.
Second, the prologue’s impactful lesson about dominoes, explained by Esta’s father, beautifully illustrates how small decisions can lead to significant life changes. This analogy set the stage for an exciting story.
The story itself is crisp, concise, visually rich, imaginative, and engaging. Revealed in a well-paced manner, it neither bores the reader with slowness nor overwhelms with speed. R.N. Jackson, though relatively new to the literary scene, has crafted a compelling narrative and plot.
The adventure within these pages is unparalleled. Combined with the straightforward writing style, it forms a recipe for a successful book. As an avid “Stranger Things” fan, I was immediately drawn into the book’s eerie atmosphere, biting my nails in anticipation.
The characters, especially Esta and Simon, are exactly what I seek in protagonists: bravery, courage, humor, strong morals, and positivity. Their chemistry is palpable, yet they shine as individuals as well.
One aspect worth highlighting is the father-daughter dynamic. Esta’s deep love and constant reflection on her father’s teachings are profoundly moving. This dynamic, often overlooked in literature, resonated with me, especially considering the author’s dedication of the book to his three daughters, encapsulating the joyous moments between a father and daughter.
The book concludes perfectly, yet as the first in a series, leaves many questions unanswered. I eagerly anticipate R.N. Jackson’s future works.
Overall, I highly recommend this book to all readers. It sets a high bar for 2024, challenging you to find a more captivating read in the new year!
