“Nerdection Must Read”
Cracks the first instalment is a science fiction story by L.A. Prendergast that explores what it means to be alive, to belong, and to face the unknown.
Spoiler-Free Plot:
Travis was an ordinary man, caught in the rhythm of everyday life, until death came for him. But instead of fading into nothingness, he was pulled back by a mysterious presence. Marrow, an orb of light who saw something in Travis that no other human had, not even Travis himself. He brought Travis back, not to Earth, but to a world that felt strange and distant.
Travis is now alive in a cave, and he shares a deeper bond with Marrow. The creature lives within his mind, lending him sight beyond human limits, powers, and guiding him through different paths.
As the journey continues, Travis and Marrow cross through many Spheres, vast and unknown worlds, until they arrive in one unlike the rest. This world had beings that looked like humans but were called Fragments, and something about this place pulls at Travis’s soul. Meanwhile, he feels a call from the Mother Crystal, the one who gives life to the green fragments —a call that seems to be something deeper and more meaningful.
Soon, Travis meets Wallum. A vision flashes through Travis’s mind, leaving him confused. He falls unconscious, unaware that something deep within this new world has recognised him and that nothing will remain the same.
Furthermore, as time passes, Travis helps multiple fragments and is declared the assistant of Hefful, a metalsmith of the town. Soon after, the fragile calm shatters. A terrifying creature known as Wyrm returns and attacks the outer caves, stealing away two main Fragments, a guard, and a caretaker of Parla.
As fear spreads, Travis feels something calling him, a pull from the Mother Crystal, the origin of all life in this world.
Eventually, Travis finds himself to be the leader of the group of fragments to rescue the lost fragments, but the situation only gets worse. The journey uncovers truths that could shake their entire world.
When he returns, not everyone welcomes him. But the whispers of betrayal grow louder, and soon Travis finds himself accused of the unthinkable. No one knew that after their return, Travis would be considered a traitor by all.
Read the book and dive into Travis’s journey through wonder, danger, and betrayal, and discover what happens when one man is chosen to change the fate of an entire world.
My Take On Cracks: Book One in the Saga of the Spheres:
Cracks Book One in the Saga of the Spheres is a Sci-Fi book that felt like stepping into another world. The world L.A. Prendergast created is unlike anything I’ve read before.
I loved how the environment wasn’t just a backdrop; the way it was explained shaped the story and the characters.
“You must learn, you must experiment, you will fail, and you will succeed.”
I loved the character of Travis as he is one of those characters who doesn’t start special, but that’s what makes him so interesting. He’s thrown into a world that doesn’t make sense, literally brought back from death, and instead of suddenly becoming a hero, he struggles.
He questions everything, stumbles through choices, and holds a quiet kind of sadness that makes him feel real. I didn’t just read his journey, I felt it with him.
The writing is poetic but not overdone. It’s slow in a good way, like the story wants you to sit with it, think, and feel things. There’s something raw and reflective in the way the characters talk and process everything happening around them.
You can tell the author wasn’t just trying to write a sci-fi adventure; this book is more than that. The author’s writing style is simple yet imaginative and engaging.
“Seeing something incredible in a dream is a lot more than just inspiration. Things can exist in dreams that could never in the real world, but you never get to keep any of it. You’re supposed to appreciate them while they last, or at least I think so.”
Cracks is a story that blends emotion, mystery, and thought. It lingers in your mind even after the last page. It’s a highly recommended book for sci-fi, fantasy readers, and absolutely for those who love a light touch of philosophy in their reads, like me.
Even in this world, minds often find ways to be cruel.
Age Rating:
The book is recommended for all 13+.
