Controversy Unfolds: J.D. Barker’s BookTok Promotion Sparks Backlash and Professional Fallout

Archive: January 2024 news. Corrected October 9, 2026. A promotional email for J.D. Barker’s Behind a Closed Door drew criticism from BookTok creators. The campaign invited paid, sexually suggestive videos featuring the book.

According to Publishers Weekly’s January 26, 2024 report, the email came from BestOfBookTok, a firm Barker co-founded. Suggested videos included using the book to cover body parts. Some recipients described the pitch as uncomfortable or predatory. Concerns were also raised about minors using BookTok; this does not establish that the email was sent to minors.

Barker apologized and told Publishers Weekly that the campaign had not been approved. He said the email was sent before a substantial rewrite because of a chain of errors, and accepted responsibility.

Agent Alec Shane of Writers House confirmed to Publishers Weekly that he no longer represented Barker. The report said Hampton Creek Press could not be reached for comment; it did not say the publisher had ended its relationship with him. Hampton Creek Press subsequently promoted the novel in an April 17, 2024 announcement.

The fallout from this incident underscores the delicate balance required in book marketing, especially in the digital age where influencer partnerships are increasingly common. It raises important questions about the ethical boundaries of promotional strategies and the responsibilities of authors and PR firms in such collaborations.

As the literary community continues to navigate the complexities of book promotion in the digital era, this incident serves as a cautionary tale about the need for sensitivity, professionalism, and ethical considerations in marketing strategies.

Correction, October 9, 2026: An earlier version said Hampton Creek Press and Kaye Publicity had distanced themselves from Barker. We have removed those unsupported claims. For the reporting on the email, Barker’s response, and his agent’s departure, see Publishers Weekly.
