Genre: Contemporary, Literary Fiction: Psychological

Year Published: 2023

Nerdection Rating:

“Nerdection Worth to Read”

A psychiatrist who is seriously in need of psychotherapy is something we’ve all heard of before – and it makes sense, right? This story is about exactly that, but the difference is this psychiatrist is in denial.

Readers who love serious reading material sprinkled with satire and humor will enjoy reading this piece of fiction. The author introduces you to Jack Rackham, a psychiatrist with serious issues that need to be addressed, or he will not endure.

You will also meet Jack’s wife, Bonny, who will do anything she can to help him face the ghosts of his past. Will Jack be able to face the fears hidden so deep that even he forgets they exist, or will he keep denying them, spiraling deeper into his mind?

The problem is that Jack is on the verge of losing the person he loves the most. So, will he take the right turn at the crossroads or keep on doing what he does best – hiding inside himself?

Spoiler-free Summary

The Looney Bin by Stan Kapuchinski is what you would call an insider’s perspective of what’s going on at a psychiatric clinic. In this book, you’ll read all about the emotional problems these professionals have to listen to or face on a daily basis.

From staring down the barrel of a gun to losing some of your loyal patients to suicide, it’s not for everybody. You need to be born to do this type of job, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t leave a mark.

Even the most professional of them will have to face the fact that they, too, need to talk to someone at some point. That is what is happening with Jack, the protagonist of this story, who lives in constant denial.

But his wife, Bonny, is determined to help him on a different road where he can face his own issues. To do that, Jack has to dig deep into himself, where all his ghosts have been hidden for many years.

It’s not going to be an easy journey, and the reader has the opportunity to go with Jack and Bonny on this ride. Will they be able to get all the way to the end, where healing and the real Jack are, and stay together?

That is not all this story is about, though; there are many interesting cases in the story, and you will love how they were resolved. All the stories are fresh and have an interesting take on the daily routine of this type of professional institution.

Readers will be interested in the way issues and emotional problems are resolved with the patients and how Jack works through his issues along the way.

My Take Away on The Looney Bin

The author, Stan Kapuchinski, knows his craft and is clearly a skilled professional who loves to help others solve their problems. While the dialogue of this fictional story is fluent and crisp, the medical side is interesting, but nothing unexpected.

Stan’s intimate understanding and overwhelming knowledge of his profession as a psychiatrist are clearly visible in the book. Every chapter has just the right amount of humor and earnestness to make the reader understand that this is not just a story.

There are many years of experience behind every situation the main character of the book must resolve. This gives the reader the impression of the graveness of some of these emotional issues.

The story is easy to read and follow without too much technical detail so that everyone can understand without the need for a degree. The Looney Bin will appeal to a broad audience and is a definite page-turner, a book you can read in a few sittings.

About The Author Of The Looney Bin

Stan Kapuchinski is a psychiatrist who has practiced in Connecticut, Florida and also a bit of time in Queensland, Australia. His extensive experience working with people with emotional problems led to his non-fiction book, “Say Goodbye to your PDI (Personality Disordered Individual). Recognize People Who Make You Miserable and Eliminate Them from Your Life for Good!” He wrote this book to help many people recognize that they are being guilted as the cause for a loveless, non-gratifying relationship by the other person who manipulates and controls them. With that insight, the suffering person can give up their guilt and go on to live a happy, fulfilling life.

Along with writing a widely read news column on mental health, he has had a radio call-in show in addition to appearing on numerous TV and radio programs as an expert on mental health issues.

His present psychological fiction novel, “The Looney Bin”, continues the theme of how human beings deal with our imperfections and the various ways they either confront or deny them to ourselves.

Now thriving in sunny, southwest Florida,Stan hopes that “The Looney Bin” not only tells a compelling story , but also inspires some reader introspection leading to more peace and contentment in their lives.

Great review. Sounds like just the kind of book I’m looking for—dialog, not pages of description.
