Quest for Freedom By Matthew Devitt – The Price of Freedom

Author: Matthew Devitt

Genre: Epic Fantasy

Year Published: 2025

Nerdection Rating:

“Nerdection Excellent Read”

The Quest for Freedom by Matthew Devitt is the opening instalment of The Conquest Trilogy, an action-heavy epic fantasy built around an immediately compelling reversal: humanity, once the most powerful species on Affer, has spent nearly five centuries enslaved by the very races that defeated it.

At the centre of the story is Fletcher Rush, a blacksmith who has prepared for rebellion since childhood. Fletcher is charismatic, frighteningly determined, recklessly confident, and not always easy to admire—which is precisely what makes him interesting. His campaign is driven by an undeniably righteous goal, but his methods repeatedly force the reader to question where liberation ends and conquest begins.

Spoiler-Free Plot

Fletcher’s rebellion begins with little more than a carefully planned escape and one unexpected ally. From there, the novel steadily expands into a military campaign involving ruined capitals, infiltrations, political deception, brutal battles, and rival kingdoms with their own hidden agendas.

The world contains angels, demons, elves, hybrids, the resurrected “dammed,” and several stranger creatures waiting beyond the immediate war. Each society has its own leadership and internal conflicts, giving the larger struggle room to develop across the planned trilogy. Rather than presenting the nonhuman kingdoms as a single united enemy, the story shows their arrogance, fear, rivalries, and political weaknesses.

My Take on Quest for Freedom

The novel’s greatest strength is its momentum. It rarely remains still for long, and each victory creates a more dangerous problem. The battles are easy to visualise, the stakes continually rise, and Fletcher’s strategies make the rebellion feel earned rather than conveniently successful. I also appreciated that Fletcher makes costly mistakes. People die because he miscalculates, and those losses create tension within his own ranks.

The supporting cast provides welcome contrast. Ji’s development from frightened escapee to capable leader is especially satisfying, while Crystal frequently supplies the caution and strategic clarity Fletcher lacks. Allica and Miller also introduce promising threats for later books.

Despite its dark premise, the book frequently uses banter to keep the story from becoming relentlessly grim. Fletcher and Ji’s friendship is particularly enjoyable: their arguments about food, fighting, blacksmithing, and Fletcher’s terrible decisions create some of the novel’s most naturally entertaining moments.

The novel places a strong emphasis on action, with detailed battle sequences that will especially appeal to readers who enjoy combat-driven fantasy. Fletcher’s passionate speeches reinforce his determination and growing influence as a leader, while the story’s swift progression through each victory keeps the momentum consistently high. Slower moments exploring grief, moral conflict, and the challenges of governing could have added even greater emotional depth and given some of the novel’s most powerful developments more room to resonate.

Still, this is an ambitious and entertaining debut with a protagonist who is heroic, dangerous, and increasingly difficult to categorise. Readers who enjoy violent rebellion narratives, large-scale warfare, determined underdogs, extensive combat, and morally complicated leaders should find plenty to appreciate here.
