We all have spent our early years of life in educational institutions. The schools have raised us with a mindset that if we get good grades, a rewarding future will be secured. Good grades meant good jobs.

But now that we have grown up, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Maybe the delinquent who was never attending classes now lives his life to the fullest with no financial or lifely worries whatsoever.

Nathaniel Malabonga explains in “One Plus One is not equal to Two” how we have been misguided.

What it’s About:

If hard work and honesty were all that were needed to navigate a successful life, then there would be no toxicity, and fewer people with no jobs or suffering. Everyone knows that’s not the case. The world is unfair. Any of us can make a list of the unfair things that have happened to us, even if we moved with good intentions and a powerful degree on our side.

When we were younger, we sulked about how the boy with enough family background got an A grade even if he didn’t study. But after graduating, when we step into the real world, society judges us. Now, good grades don’t matter; only the social status.

Sometimes, your path isn’t even your choice. The world is built on some rules, and if you don’t follow them, the world tends to get merciless. If you go against the crowd and succeed, you’re a revolutionary. If you fail, then you’re nothing.

Everyone holds something close to their heart. It might be as simple as watering the plants—but it’s special. And when that one thing is taken away, it’s like a dam breaks inside. But to the world, letting it all out feels like a sin.

But that certainly doesn’t mean we ought to get aggressive too. If we start to judge others, then we pass our pain to them. Judging implies we’re on higher ground than the others. We laugh off the shortcomings of others, thinking somehow it makes us more successful than they are.

“One Plus One is not equal to Two” by Nathaniel Malabonga is all about how the unfairness of the world gets to us. How we react under these circumstances, and how it affects others around us.

My Take on One Plus One Is Not Equal to Two:

Reading One Plus One is Not Equal to Two felt like having someone finally say out loud all the things we quietly accept but never confront. It reminds you that success isn’t always logical or deserved.

What I truly appreciated in this book was how the author provided observations he made in real life and drew meaningful conclusions from them.

Even though one plus one is not equal to two made no sense in the beginning, but by the end of the book, it did. The writing was engaging and reader-interactive. It was clear and profound in its own ways.

The author also explained how our health and mental states matter. They have a major impact on how we deal with things. It gives us space to think about what we are compromising in order to be successful or wealthy.

It was a quick but impactful read. It left me thinking longer than I had expected.

Age Rating:

This book is highly recommended for all readers aged 13 and above.
